In fact, all the mechanics present in each game exist to facilitate and provide meaning to the turn-based tactical combat system that lies at their heart. It is still useful to use non-attacking units to protect flanks of attacking units, but it is unnecessary to change their facing.Age of Wonders is a venerated 4X series with a strong emphasis on combat. And now that Guard Breaker exists, if a unit's guard is broken it will still face the unit breaking it, which means you don't have control of the facing now anyway. So if a unit isn't attacking, it doesn't matter what direction it is facing. A guarding unit CANNOT be flanked at all. The facing of a unit in guard mode does not matter. If you decide to not attack with a unit on a given turn, then it will automatically go into guard mode at the end of the combat round. Sure, i'm referring to when units aren't attacking. it takes some practice, but if you're on the defensive then facing is crucial to keep your units alive. sometimes it's better to attack a unit face to face so as not to leave your unit's flank wide open. but you bring up another good point about how attacking automatically changes the facing of your unit which can leave it vulnerable to the opponent's flank attacks. Manually changing the facing of units only has an effect on combat in a very limited number of situations. this makes it more difficult to flank the back of your army, and for phase & backstab units to do their thing.īut you can only do that when you don't use the archers to attack which means that they end up in guard mode at the end of the turn so that it doesn't even matter which way they are facing. you always want your back row units facing backwards or to the exposed flank.
